It is true. This was once happened in our family when the name of a girl from Ambo was changed from Gaddise to kidist by my dad.But she was strong enough to defend her self and regain her original name Gaddise when she was in Grade 8. I remeber when Gaddise was trying to teach us Oromifa.I am a witness ,this happens. It is not the matter of who wrote the story. We have to accept this. This is history people may learn from this and stop changing names. I have been reading when some people are insulting Tesfaye.I didn’t see any flaw in the story. Our people let’s accept this.

    • Nafkot says:

Tesfaye G/ab tottally violated the copy right of Bealu Girma. On the book “Admas Bashager”, the known character is Lulit. Lulit was originally her name was chaltu. Finally she converted her name to Lulit to cope up with life in Addis. Bealu Girma wrote the events in fashionable and lovely way. It has no venom words to divide one people to the other. Belau raised the problem with solution on his book. But Tesfaye considered himsef as disciplinary of Bealu Girma, writting some pages of Admas Bashager wiith toxic and venom words to facilitate Ethiopia to be like Somalia. Shabiya become the king of Esta Africa if Ethiopa is weakened. This is the strategy. Shabiya by itself cannot do any thing unless use Ethiopians. Shabiya used Ethiopan blood collaborating with TPLF to be independent . This was the first chapter. The 2nd chapter will be: Shabiya using the remaining Ethiopa Esat and G7 for final attempt to wipe out Ethiopia from the map.

      • Belayneh says:

        Nafkot,
For Tesfaye to copy a character [Lulit] out of Baalu Girma’s Kadmas Bashager amounts to plagiarism and is illegal. If you find more of Baalu’s statements in Tesfaye’s books then custodians of Baalu’s works could sue Tesfaye for copyright violations.

    • Moyata says:

i Think this article is false. name changing happend back 40 years ago when oromos cant go to school unless they have amara’s name. there is no reason to change your name this days in ethiopia. because every bpdy can identify them self how they wanna identify them self. YOU DONT HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR NAME UNLESS YOU WANT CHANGE YOUR NAME BY CHOICE . AS MATTER FACT IN OROMIA AREA IF YOUR NAME DOESNT SOUND OROMO YOU CANT BE CONSIDERED FOR THE JOB. WHO EVER WROTE THIS GOD DAMN ARTICLE SHOULD HIS RESERCH VERY CARE FULLY.

  2. mengedegna says:

He have no Wright to say anything about Ethiopia oromo.priod. ..
    Given this guy back ground.
He should say something about his own country. The kunama afar so on.
    Good day!

  3. Alem says:

    Dear Tigist, Few errors.
    1. Your assumption that Tesfaye lost $30,000 before the book was even on the market is silly.
    2. I am intrigued how Oromo leaders could not see Tesfaye the fox masquerading as sympathizer of Oromo cause. He cared less about Oromos when he joined TPLF after serving Derg.
    3. Tesfaye is attention seeker. That is why he writes controversial subjects. You create controversy, you make money. It is that simple. He calls himself “Ijjoollee Bushooftu” but he cannot write in Afaan Oromo. He looked down on the Oromo [as Eritrean] growing up in Bushooftu. Now he quotes Afaan Oromo sayings that he copied from someone. He goes around your back to praise Professor Getachew Haile [see his interview in “Life”.
    4. I don’t know what your literary competence is or if you have read Yesidetegnaw Mastawesha. The book shows very clearly Tesfaye is not a novelist but one engaged in yellow journalism. He never stops talking about Meles, Azeb, Mengistu, etc. Every thing he writes about is already public knowledge. Azeb is corrupt. So what is new? Bereket is Alamoudi’s friend. Bacha Debele is Oromo and he dances. Dr. Negasso is weak brained? [Imagine Tesfaye who is unschooled criticizing Dr. Negasso, the social historian, as intellectually weak.]Enough for today. I hope you got the message. Have a good weekend.

    • Ermi says:

      Alem,

Tesfaye writes because is a superb writer. He doesn’t need attention through his writings. He already got it.

You say he cannot write in oromic. Do you write in any language?

you said he never stopped talking about the woyane icons. Well he knows so much about them, that is why he keeps talking about them.

You said he is unschooled criticizing Dr.. Well, there are millions of schooled yet incompetent individuals. I could guess you could be one of them by the way you presented your argument against Tesfaye.

You said he cared less about Oromo when he joined TPLF. At the same time you want to protect the TPLF members from his criticism. What a contradiction within one single self.

Anyways, if you read his books you know how good a writer he is. And he is writing history to be passed to the next generation. What you think is known by everyone Today must be documented in a book to be passed as history for the future.

Let me conclude by quoting Mark Twain: “Don’t let schooling interfere with your education.”

      Peace and love to all!

      Ermi

      • Alem says:

Ermi, You need to re-read my comments. This time try [I know it is hard] but try to not read your ideas into them. Your Twain quote is misapplied.

    • Demis says:

      Dear Alem, a few points:
      1. Your subject :”Few errors” means no errors. Look at your self before you point you comment on someone els’s “literary competence” in your point 4.
2.On serious note, 30,000 is an underestimation. By the way publichers buy a book from an author before it is even written. It is not silly, my friend.
I may have to agree with you on points 3 and 4.
By the way, after reading his yeGazetegnaw mastawesha, I asked him what a wonderful Derg kadre he would become if he was accepted when he applied for a post at Berhanena Selam.

  4. meron says:

To my understanding, tesfaye has been writing this type of baseless or over exaggerated true like face in thinking he may still win the mind of some people. He do and he can win the mind of some people who still suffer from own created inferiority and they are happy of this particular piece, not with the rest of his chapters.

    Imagine his baseless allegation?

    1. He attempt to equate Addis Ababa with Amhara-if Addis is equal to amhara, what about the history of Gurages (let alone others) who were successful business men everywhere in Addis since the imperial era and even before? I never heard any Gurage called Gedamu. They lived in addis having their own name to to-date. If that is the case, i wonder how Dej Azimach Balcha was established in Addis.

My young father (from oromo family) in Addis for sometimes where he met my Amhara mother. Our name range from Meron (the youngest) to Gadisa (the eldest).

Though my father was alone (as he moved to addis) and joined my mother’s family, no one has stooped him to name his first son Gadisa (as he was alone, he was optimistic in his son and he called him Gadisa), and if it is as few biased oromos whose mind was spoiled by people like tesfaye and meles, my brother could have been not only called Minilik, but also he can’t become an engineer.

By the way, what do say when you meet a person who is a serious Christian, but his name is Mohamed? is this not a really in the current Wolo? or are you going to tell me the same stupid argument that says—these were oromos forced to be Christians?

Name is something that you give to your child based on some kind of happenings, events, experiences, religion—-for instance, my father called his first son Gadisa and he has his explanation for that.

I recently met a person called doctor in afar and he never went to school, and i asked him why he was called doctor without going to school. when i met him he was in his 40s. He told me the story—when he was born his father was working with an American geographer and researcher (often called him doctor) as a daily labor. His father gave that name to his son as he liked the researcher.

I am not saying Ethiopia and our history is pure of such a mistakes here and there. I am also sure there is no country in the world free of such mistakes. There are several Amharas whos name is the gurage or oromo name as they live withe these communities. Similarly, there are several oromos or tigres whose name may be Oromo or Afar. But the appeal that Oromos were forced to change name when come to Addis Ababa and school is baseless.

If that was the case, there could have no single scientist in the current and past generation with oromo name. But there are several scientists both in the current and past generation with oromo origin and name.

Ill tesfaye–go hell, i can’t pray for you, as you determined not to accept such a blessings from any one.

    Merze!

  5. teshome says:

Whether we like Tesaye Geberab or not is one thing, but we couldn’t deny a kind of Fatuma’s touching story that had affected many Oromos life in Ethiopia.
Why are we surprised about Fatuma’s story , the founder of OLF ‘Lencho Leta’ his name wasn’t Yohanas.
My life long friends are oromos and Amharas, but we are still are unable to talk about such similar issues. We Ethiopians should develop a political culture engaging any subject, if we need to solve our complicated sociopolitical problems.
Some Segment of our society, vehemently herald that the new Tesfay book opens an old Oromo wound. But I completely disagree, rather this is a virulent anti-oromos attitude that needs to be worked through. Don’t forget there might still be unresolved pain and shame about it.
I don’t deny that I have a clear reservation about Tesfay’s political motive, but at same time time I believed that when Tesfay wrote this book neither he had an axe to grind nor trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill….
The previous Ethiopia political soft ware industry was not all good for Ormos and recognizing this fact is half of the solution. But if we only prefer to glorify Menilik and his likes dynasty, as the chauvinistic mentality worked for long, we won’t get an exit forever from the muddy politics we stuck in

    • Tazabiw says:

      @Teshome
This is the best opinion I have ever read!!!
We Ethiopians seems to never learn from Ertrea and Mengistu. You cant force people to ignore facts.

Our politics stuck in the mud because we are not open to this kind of discussion, especially on this kind of truth we all know happened in Oromos.

Telling the truth doesn’t mean destroying unity. People like in ESAT don’t have ear for this but thy slogan unity by undermining the pain the Oromo’s bear. This doesn’t going to work unless we open our politics to all kind of debate.

  6. Gezaee Hailemichael says:

There is nothing new. Gebreab is trying to divide Ethiopians. It was not only Oromos who were oppressed. The entire Ethiopians ethnic were oppressed. Gurage were kuli, Tigrie Lemagn, others were called Shankila, not even human being. It is the system that did that. It is not any ethnic Ethiopians who did it. It is true the architects were amhara ethnic. They did it to everyone. Leave alone Oromo who were working under amhara as immigrants? even myself I was forced to change my name from Gezaee to Gezahegn after I moved to addis. I refused and held my name. They told me it was wrong to have that name Gezaee, it should be Gezahegn? This was two decades ago, not far.

Now we need to move forward guys. We do not need Gebreab to tell us the story we know already. Tell him to fuck off from Ethiopia. He is writing this destroy our country. No one can deny there was oppression on every Ethiopians. But has been addressed by Mengistu Hailemariam long ago. It is now 4 decades since those problems were adddressed. We Mr. Gebreab wanted to take us back 40 years back? why is motivation? He is on mission. His mission to sow hatred among our people and make them kill each other. The past is past and gone, we can not do anything about past systems. We can not reverse the past. People wanted to take us back to revisit the mistake of past leader are people who wanted us to hold us from going forward. Leave alone Ethiopians, even south Africans has put aside their 400 years of apartrhied history. Tell to Gebreab to get lost.

    • Kichew says:

      You have a point sir!

    • Ezana says:

Gezaee, you gay are always standing against Amhara for your inferior complex or in some psychological trauma. You can’t understand the national thinking stage Amahra got long time ago for you are in village stage. If all took their contribution what did to Ethiopia, Amahara sacrifices a lot. I can’t see any different between you and Tesfaye G/Ab.

      • Gezaee says:

        Dear Ezana,

If you will find a person without inferiority or superiority complex? it will be Gezaee. it is you who have superiority complex. you do not wana hear anything about the bad things of the past of amhara rule. You must buy a gut and swallow it. Telling the truth of about the past is not inferiority complex. If you do not except wrongs of the past? why do you cry woyane woyane then? you must learn to reason than defend blindly. Why you equate talking about the apartheid old system with antiamhara? does it mean critizing woyane is antiTigrean? then never critize woyane if that is the case? Let us then say no has done wrong including today. You wana cry about woyane bla bla, but you do not wana see the past that destroyed almost the country. Learn how to reason brother. The past amhara elites can never represent all amhara people because they were not elected. If you are defending the past apartheid system? then do not say anything about woyane then. We will defend woyane even if it is doing wrong things; it is as simple as that. You are suffering not only from superiority complex but also from ignorance and arrogance and lack of reason and logic.

  7. Manny Ayele says:

What do we expect from Isayas agent?.The things we have to do is just ignore this ignorant.

  8. Wako says:

Stupid Tolcha, Galgalo, Mati and others who still influenced on fabricated history came from enemy minded like Tesfaye G/Ab. Look how many years we wait you to walk with us in the some speed. I want to say one thing that you and your backward ethnicity never wine in this country for Ethiopian nationalism got a deep root on this land. You said Oromo city, blalala… yours is only properties under you if you have any. Meskin, how long you foolish by some political business men who rise the name Oromo without seeing their exact need? Shem on you.

I’m just wondering why Tesfaye Gebreab sleepless about Ethiopian afair? If he really want write a book about sociaty, he has his own identity crises that most of them seem to be suffering….
So, let him change his topic from the beautiful Ethiopian name to his sisters name whom have an Italian name or other else, so we can read his book… Most of all, he should leave the free and proud Ethiopian people alone!

  11. freedom says:

The story of chaltu is not exceptional to Oromos. It just happened and happens to all other people from different ethnic origin in Ethiopia especially when they first time hit the capital city. It often happened to Gurages as many are settled in the city and family members come to visit the capital frequently. Remember every Gurage girl coming to Addis is called “mushurit”. It happened to Tigrians, especially to men. It happened to Eritreans. Even people who spoke Amharic coming from the regions were ridiculed because of their accent.
When it comes to names, there is nothing exceptional either. For that matter it is everywhere in the world people want to be called with common name or culturally most popular name. I have one of the longest names. Sometimes I felt angry with my name when it put me to disadvantage. So the popular language and culture in Ethiopia was/is Amharic. City residents were likely to be called as close as possible to Amharic or were given suitable names to the prevailing culture. That does not mean it was okay but should not necessarily mean always degrading. The thing is it is common in the world. Sometimes you want to be given a name easy to catch in the culture you live in. I mean it happened to almost every ethnic group in Ethiopia. So why should this problem be specific to oromos only? Mr Tesfaye could have written about any other ethnic group including Eritreans for that matter. But clearly he chose to take advantage by driving wedge between the two major Ethiopian ethnic groups-oromo and Amhara by considering one as abuser and the other as being abused. That is unacceptable by any standard.
It does not mean similar scenarios of name calling or changing names in fear of bullying don’t exist even at this time in Ethiopia. It is rather a common phenomenon. It is the responsibility of the law of the country, when it exists, to find out which of the name calling or bullying because of origin from a particular ethnic group in unlawful and punishable.
In conclusion, the problem in Ethiopia is not special to Oromos but happens and happened to all other Ethnic groups. Tesfaye could have used another character than choosing chaltu. Perhaps he wanted to promote his agenda of promoting conflict between two major Ethiopian ethnic groups. Ethiopia is multiethnic country and it is the responsibility of the law of the country to legally protect this ethnic groups from bullying and name calling officially, by literature or even in day to day life.

What we have to discuss here is not about Tesfaye. It should be about the contents of the article. We know Tesfaye. With no question he has a mission assigned by his master and his mother land to cause harm as much as possible against our country, Ethiopia.
Any person has the right to write his/her opinions or ideas, but a judgment is up to the readers, whether to take it or reject it. In fact I do not give a damn for this guy, but sometimes you take something valuable from your enemy if you let him/her to talk about you. To evaluate whether Tesfaye is right or wrong about Chaltu we should go back to Ethiopian history. To comment fairly, and objectively we have to avoid emotions, denial, and hate. Even we know Tesfaye is the number one enemy of our beloved country, Ethiopia we have to have courage to take if he expresses truth out of many lies. One thing which we all Ethiopian should understand is this: We should not be afraid of Tesfaye’s pen. What we should afraid is the enemy within. There are groups barricading in the western countries capitals in the name of promoting democracy, and justice in Ethiopia, but venomously spreading hate and mistrust among Ethiopians, by the name of “Emama Ethiopia”. They put themselves in the first row as first Ethiopians, and others should get their baptism to be an Ethiopian. This back ward psychological makeup in some sectors of our societies is still a challenge to the survival of Ethiopia. What Tesfaye want to remind us in the name of Chaltu is this reality. We should not be denied there are no groups (s) of people who are advocating this kind of back ward mentality in our societies. The father of all these hate politics circulating around us is as a result of this toxic immoral backward mentality. It is real and some were and are feeling it! If we are truly love our country we have to have the courage to feel others feeling. We are not respecting each other’s, and I do not understand why? I do believe it is not about policy most Diaspora politicians are spreading hate against the current government. It is an extension of ethnic politics which we all failed to address it amicably. Both sides are hidden it and brewing behind the curtains, which is a scary and a time bomb if we failed to handle it diligently and solving it wisely.
Some said the existing federal system is a time bomb and some agreed it solved the prevailing ethnic problems. Both options have not free from problems, and that is why we have no absolute peace. To solve problems we have to have courage to empowering our societies in problem solving. As long as we are following elite politics we will not be free from valance cycle. We have to prepare for that.
Our historical enemies are exploiting it effectively and waiting a favorable time to detonate the bomb against us. If some naive and idiot ”oppositions” openly declared that the present Ethiopian government is the worst enemy of the Ethiopian people than Shabia, what other example do we need to confirm that Ethiopia is free from any kind of ethnic problems? Is there truth what our enemy Tesfaye has express his view in characterizing Chaltu? We have problems and need to be open minded to entertain them and solved appropriately in timely fashions. This is the only way forward. We have to be open societies to accept criticism and be objective when we targeting others to criticize. The tones and the words how Tesfaye has followed to express his views may not be 100% truth, but we should not be denied there are no truths in it. What is important to note here is, it is a history, and this generation is not accountable what has happened retrospectively. We should not be a salve of past history. Taking lesson from those past mistakes we can make our collective life better than the past. We should be ready to make a new bright history, unite our people to look promising bright future instead of handcuffed them by past history. Past history whether it is good or bad should be a fresh start for us Ethiopians. We should not be consumed by talking past history. The opportunity cost will be enormous, with no benefit.

    Long Live Ethiopia

Dears, Please don’t follow the past. But we can still learn from the past. For that matter there are also Amharas whose name are changed by Guddifecha in Oromo society.LET’S BUILD NEW COUNTRY AND MENTALITY.It is on our hand why we blame the past.Let’s learn from Nelson Mandela who forgave whites when he can get into revenge.Look the development in south africa, the state built upon harmony

  16. Atimenut says:

Tesfaye gebreab himself is suffering from an identity crisis, just like the many millions of eritreans who found themselves trapped between identifying themselves as black and more close linked(rather one and the same) as the habesha south of their new eritrea. Thats why his keens 360 of them lost their lives just of the cost of lampesuda hoping to make it to their imagined asmara within Itly.
Tesfaye Gebrea deliberately writes controversial stories to help spread the propoganda of shabia. and for this, he is paid to send of his writings for free over pdf. It is supposed it will reach as many ethiopians as possible than the hard copies. shabia embassies cover the cost of this. NOW IF YOU READ THE COMMENTS IN THIS SECTION, YOU FIND PEOPLE ENGAGED IN POLITICAL HISTORY that has the potential to wind into conflict. THIS IS THE SAME GOAL Tesafe is laboring for. Thank God his works are just vanishing into thin air, and I see no bloody conflict coming out of this nasty literature.
Guys WAKE UP and just don’t fall trap of shabia’s web via the likes of Tesfaye Gebereab. the fact that he was born in bishofut does not make him he is for Ethiopia. We can’t make the same mistake the dergue committed, believing and harboring eritreans of his likes but their heart is buried in sahel. WHY NOT HE WRITE THE IDENTITY CRISIS BACK IN ERITREA which is about to crack the whole nation at least into two???

I agree on one of your point that, it is may be good if we discuss our history openly so that it might take us a step to a long lasting solution. Where i dodnot agree is that, when the history are supposed to openly discuss is based on total lie and hate, it rather will take us to wrong destination–such as the current Amhara cleansing. You may not accept this as ethnic cleansing i knew your reasons. But if you believe what our ancestors did was wrong, and you do it same way now is more than bad.

I believe there were some systematic forcing in our past to intimidate people such as changing names. But it is not different from what woyane is doing now!! what dose that means, you get good job and in Addis if you will be woyane member? this is even more than a systemic abuse of once right by telling him—you will get a good boy friend in addis if you change your name from Chalitu to helen.

Some people are laying. See for instance what Gezaee has written. He was forced to change his name 2 dacdes ago. Two decades ago Addis is not in the hand of Amahar elites as most of you believe (Addis never had i the hand of amhar’s only). Now Gezaee was forced to change his name during woyane time, and i am sure whom shall he blame now.

My question is why are we also not able to see the other experiences, such that several oromo or gurage called by their own names? Go and ask these gurages in merkato and you wonder if you fine one called woldeamilak, but you find several called shemisu or nuredin? Imagine these people were there trading since the imperial time. Why we lie???? why the experience of my father will be hidden, but other experience such as these that can create or keep rift between people always shine like that, exaggerated like that?

I think we oromo people have stand up and keep away these parasitic people who always make us busy dealing with useless issues, and thereby keep us distant from thinking strategically. Why always oromo?

I knew amharas were called kafire metta koboo, Lalibela—-in various regions. Even within Amhara themselves Gonder may give name to gojame for instance, BUDA, Ketikach….what make it different if gurage was given with a title kuli?

Even today we are calling some of the people Anestegna ena tikaken—I donot mean it is right, but this didnot came from a given ethnic group.

Sometimes they used to write Gezahegn instead of Gezaee, but never accepted the Gezahegn.

We have to admit there was a black apartheid system in Ethiopia that humiliated non-Amharic speakers. This was a reality. Other languages were derided and ridiculed and people using Amharic instead of their languages. I never had the change to study Tigrignea; but I learnt Amharic in formal school. We were all denied our language, our culture, our norm, our tradition. We must admit this. For instance, Tigrignea has been destroyed almost completely while Tigrignea is more advanced than Amharic since Geez is more advanced than Amharic. Now Tigreans do not even pray in Tigrignea; they pray Amharic. You will go to a Tigrean house and you will only see Amharic verses sticked on their wall. Tigreans are not still able to use their language. You can google and check if there is any Tigrignea gospel music ? There is none. you only see Amharic.

Who is really racist or ethnicist? Is really woyane more racist or ethnicist than the previous systems? absolutely no. At least woyane allows every ethnic to use their language and to practice and develop their culture. But in the old system we were all denied our whoness and forced to be assimilated to main stream amhara langua fraca and culture. I know some narrow amharas blame woyane but the truth is woyane came to exist because of ethnicism. They were inspired by ethnic discrimination. That is why they called themselves TPLF.That is why we have OLF, TPLF, ONLF,… these were not created by woyane. TPLF and the rest ethnic FFFs were created by amhara elite ethnic system they imposed on the entire Ethiopian making their language the only language to be used and developed. You will find Tigreans writing nobles in Tigrignea, but in Amharic? why? why people can not write novels in their own mother tongue? We have to accept these past realities.

However, amhara ethnic must never be victimized or condemned for that. It was an apartheid system set up by few amhara elites who were not elected by amhara. Neither the amhara nor the non -amhara had the opportunity to control the system.

We must admit the past mistakes and correct the problems we have. We must stop blame woyane for everything. Woyanes are the by product of the past apartheid system. You harvest what you sow. You drink the wine from the Vine you planted. Why is woyane supposed to be an angel when we know woyane is the by product of the old system?

We must not defend wrongs things because the rulers were from our ethnic. South African whites now admitted Apartheid was wrong and now they accept equality. We must accept the past bad system as bad which destroyed our country almost. We must find out the cause of our problem instead of talking the problem.

Again: we must learn to objective in our argument with being biased. That is the only solution for our national problem. Pointing fingers will not help. We must accept equality and we must accept our history all the good and bad and move forward and address and solve the problems we have today objectively without attacking people. We must attack our problem objectively instead of attacking people in groups. We must move forward now.

Gezzaee how you doing I am good, I been read your comments posted in this media and always found your stand against Amhara in almost all of your comments even unrelatedly. First of all in every regime there are administrable mistake comes from different source and this should lead a responsible question from the citizens to get a reasonable answer to minimize its reappearance. If any illegal act done by any regime any time, the legal responsibility lay on individuals at office but not to their ethnicity. Bro, counting every political situation ethnically is instinctual behavior nearest to animals and insects for they know their belongings only through sense. But human beings have a conscious mined that lead through reason and shouldn’t be affirm any effect without bothering about its cause. According to your logical inference, any mistake done by EPRDF, Tigrigna speakers would responsible for that. But it is not. I want to ask you this, why you aren’t let your children learn only in Tigrina, if you have any for Tigrina is more advanced. Ato Gezzaee, have you ever heard about ‘ postmodern historian’? This historian got their origin from African philosophers who tried to show western colonization and their language on African people. But our brothers used it to attack Amharas by substituting Amaharas to western and non-Amharas to Africans only for their power hanger. Postmodern historians affirmed that “truth is what we said. We can make our history. That is why Eritrean Pr Isayas Afework said that ‘State of Ethiopia is founded only after 2nd world war because truth is what he said. Any way if you have any reservation towards previous individuals on political power, tell us their mistake individually, what had happened and how we correct it. Otherwise it is comes from great ignorance to assimilate not only a mistake done by an individuals but also a prize done by and individuals to his/her language speakers. To all, changing personal name is a choice and it is not only to some language speakers but to all including Amharic speakers. Thank you

We must accept the past bad system as bad which destroyed our country almost. We must find out the cause of our problem instead of talking and accusing others for being the cause for it.

Again: we must learn to be objective in our argument without being biased. That is the only solution for our national problem. Pointing fingers will not help. We must accept equality and we must accept our history all the good and bad and move forward and address and solve the problems we have today objectively without attacking people. We must attack our problem objectively instead of attacking people in groups. We must move forward now.

This guy called Tesfay is evil. May his soul burn in hell.
I am oromo who was born in a rural village and studied and worked in Addis. no one has forced me to change my name, Tolcha. I like it and I keep it. I can`t deny that there might be some historical situation where people could directly or indirectly influenced to change names. So, what? we have to learn from it and get over it. Go to Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, … you name it…. people change their names to English name and the local names are becoming hard to find them…. but you never hear them complaining….in Kenya after 50 years of independence from Britian…more than 90% of the population still gives English names for their children….So, you still claim that Britian is still influencing them to give their children a British name….. Even in Ethiopia…. the younger generation name is becoming more of related with bible or quran..even many are giving also English names….so, is there a specific group forced them to do that? no, it is there choice.

But, tesfaye Gebre Ebab want to instigate the hatrade between the poor oromos and amharas…he did his first book for Weyanes to divide and weaken these two big ethnic groups…some oromos appreciate hims and embrace this evil guy….when he broke out with weyanes…he pretended that he is giving out many secretes…but no secrete that he revailed so far except bar talks and individual personalities….now, he came with another poison, ye-sedetegnaw mastawesha…still targetting the two big ethnic groups….I pray his life ends so soon as such person deserves not to live…there are so many people tries all the best to bring people together…make love among humanity to flourish…in our culture elders facilitate reconsilation even by telling lies for the better good. Some evils in human flash, like Tesfaye, passes sleepless night to divide people and ensure bloods of innocent children, elders, men and women shades for the causes which they haven`t created it, they were not part of it….Oh…God, help my country and my beautiful people of Ethiopia… give us a leader who care for the folks not for his unending greed and evil acts…May you also remove such evils like tesfaye from the face of the earth so that humanity live in peace and harmony…Amen

I don’t want to take away anything out of the story, It is a touching and tragic story of unfulfilled potential of once a bright girl. But I want to give a little context.

Except the derogatory word “Gala”, The Gonderes and the Gojams (for that matter almost everyone from countryside) also receives equal sticks. For their name, tradition and accent. Well fortunately for the Amhara, they have no language barriers, But They also had to/have to change their name, erase their tattoo and “correct ” their accent. I for one blame ignorance and identity crisis as main cause.

Being modern was/is not understood well in the city population. I don’t think she was being forced to become Amara (fellow Amhara countryside girl also had to pass through the same pain to fit in “modern” city life).

  22. Haftom says:

By the way, is the name “Helen ” related to Amhara ethinicity ? I don’t think so.

  23. Tolcha says:

I AM Sorry for those still now they are in dark ,Please wake up to understand the oromo question and the oromo resistance ,guys don’t cry

  24. Ittu Aba Farda says:

It could be true because our Oromo kin and kits who happened to live in the vicinity of the Capital had to do this kind of name change in order to make it there. But that was not always true. There ministers and at some higher level positions still bearing their Oromo names either as their full or first or last names. But that was what happened years ago. My Oromo kin and kits are not in any was subjected to such aggressive cultural domination. Even though I vehemently oppose some of laws put in place by the current regime back home but I strongly believe that all the questions related to the nations rights have been amicably answered. There are some individuals and groups who still carry the banners of ‘national’ liberations with wicked and hidden intentions to carve out a fiefdom so they will be ‘motees’ or magnates if you will, on the backs of my people. They think they have found their Mojo to charm a very large and diversified ethnic group like our beloved of Oromos. They may not be aware of their action but by such worthless outcry they are hurling insults at my people. They think Oromos are gullible that they will take them in as their 13th hour liberators. Can you what happens to you when you grew up gulping down missionary cakes? You become sugar drunk and therefore senselessly hyper active. These ‘story tellers’ used to deafening about the glorified achievements of their ‘liberation army’ for more than 3 decades but only to cut loose and run leaving more than ten thousand of our priceless youth. They left them out and dry in the desert. But they bought first class two way air ticket to Minnesota and Stockholm and left via Bole as honorable diplomats. They still call themselves leaders. Can you believe that? They know and have heard me saying this through their lieutenants since they cut and ran like rabbits. Hello again!!! Issues pertinent to national question have been satisfactorily fulfilled. There are no neftegnas now. They were gone for good with the land reform of 1975. Nowadays what these bigots are trying to tell me is that those old gone neftegnas are trying a comeback to reverse the victories achieved regarding the national question. They have coined up a new lingo and call them ‘neo-neftegnas’. I am trying to be mad or laugh at such claims. But they should be told as it is. They are trying to isolate my proud Oromo people and pitch them against everyone else. They will continue to blame neftegnas (sorry neo-neftegnas) for the mayhem to follow. Then they will slice out a comfortable size of a territory as their demesne and loot. That is what they are salivating for like a full grown mastiff. They have already started looting now as we speak. They pan handle in Asmara (Some of them claim that Asmara has an Oromo origin etymologically speaking), at mosques and churches every where. They never worked and make a living by selling the identity of a very proud people. These are despicable liars.

  26. Fukeraw says:

It is disheartening thing to read such tragic stories about the past. Growing up in a mainly Somali ethnic Awrajas, we never felt such humiliating of linguistic and cultural genocide level. Yes, there was constant and systematic pressure from habesha officials in the area to assimilated the locals in vain. There were constant mistrust between government and natives to the point where employment and other assistance were completely cut off from citizens. Even hiring a local police from high school level was taboo, because they could neither trust the people without changing their names, way of life or religion nor able convincing them to do so. Among the the common racist names uttered against natives were leba shiftam and shritam somale. They were forustrated to the point where even Haile Selasse commented once `the day Geedi and Genet got married officially is the day the true Ethiopianet wins.` He was referring an intermarriage possibility between Amhara and Somali communities. It never happened, and if it did, it was few and far between. They even tried to fund such scheme back then to no avail. Not that young people, including my self have`t felt attraction to each other, but there was huge cultural gap and mistrust between the groups, especially the habesha`s pretentious cultural supremacy, which elders disliked.

On the whole, Somali suffered lesser psychological and cultural abuse compared other ethnic groups and there were few reasons and among them (1) The advantage of the geographic location, which was far remote from the centre of power, corruption and debauchery of the kings like Shewa (2) they were far from habesha`s sphere of influence and the land was inhospitable to the feudal lifestyle. (3) When abused some used to run to friendly and relative neighbors like Somalia or Djibouti, which welcomed them with open hands but others nationalities were no so lucky, I guess.

It is amazing to know that these people who commented here cried just because he wrote the fact. Defaming oromo people, and ridiculing their identity was not only systematic, it was nearly official. Read all history books written by amharas before weyane came to power and you will understand what I am saying. The derogatory word gala was common, including on some medias. I hope you don’t forget Ababa Tesfaye, who was imprisoned for this case. He didn’t create it. He got it from what the previous regimes set up. As an oromo, it is painful to accept this for me. Still today, amhara youngsters try to do the same. Now i am telling you about my so called friends. They didn’t create it again. They took it from their dad. I am sorry. Tesfaye presented the reality we have been in. I believe we have to discuss on it, and give it a solution, rather than complaining about who brought it out. In defence of Tesfaye G/ab , let me tell you, i like him more than you even hate him. If you hate him , it is your problem, and that is your personal case. Unless you are that idiot, you can’t say he wrote false, fabricated. You know it is fact. If the problem is why only about oromo, I clearly tell you what you know, your problem is oromophobia. I also believe not only oromos got in to these mess, but i don’t ask this because what was written also has all other identities that were victim of poor amharanization. Here oromo was presented as an example, and partly also due to the fact that amhara consider oromo as their biggest enemy. That was why they tried to paint bad. They said and officially wrote that we came from somewhere else. Let me ask. From where? Oromo is indigenous to east Africa. This is one fact that amharas selectively attack oromos. Who others did they say came from somewhere else. Only to Oromos. That unites oromos together to stand for their name and identity. We oromos got good land that theywere jealous. They wanted to call the land theirs, so we had to come from somewhere else. What I regret abt this is that it was sadly official. Look how much they tried. And now instead of solving the problem, they complain why that is written. My friends, i grew up in oromia. This kind of history is written and read in millions in afan oromo. If you say what you are posting here to one 10th grade oromo student, he considers you as complete idiot. So don’t fool yourselves. Long live oromia, long live the country of nations, nationalities and peoples, Ethiopia. I curse those who hate nations, nationalities and peoples languages, cultures and identities. God forbid them from our country!

  28. Gemechu says:

My dad name was Gemechu and grew up in addis my friends used to mAke fun of my dad name however I grew up making fun of this girl SHEWAYE who happens to be an Amharic name and this girl eventually changes her name to Meron.
TESFAYE wants to blame only Amharas for the mistakes of Addis Abebians which includes Eritreans grew up in Addis.
We kids from addis considered ourselves modern and ridiculed people from the regions be it Amhara Oromo GURAGES so it was evil of Tesfsye to present the story of Chaltu as a unique case

Every backward society has problem of undermining each other and education is a key to change this kind of attitudes not writing and preaching Hate as Tesfaye

OLF and some Oromos think it is only MENLIK creates a country by force and expansion every country in the world is created by force, Minisota was also become part of USA by force so it has no use to preach Hate between these two great Ethnics ie Oromo and Amharas he best thing to do is to acknowledge past mistakes and work to correct them and reconcile

Tesfaye like any Eritrean wants a divided and weak Ethiopia for the good of ERITREA and I want my Oromo people want the motive of Tesfaye and Eriitreans if Tesfsye had a love and respect for Oromos he should have written in Oromiffa and please do not fall for Tesaye evil ajendas

If the Oromo people complain that they have not been treated fairly through out the Ethiopian history. I belive the goverment of Ethiopia has the responsiblity to appologize for all the wrongs that have been done to the Oromo people. The Ethiopian people need to be also policically correct and need to be reserved using deregatory words against the Oromo people. These small jokes that are being said now and then are hurtful and need to be stopped.
