Dagim tries to play polemics, but his all argument is anybody who dares to challenge the government minister’s political beliefs is a corporate running dog. To be frank, I read Erassu’s article, and I was not impressed. While he pointed out some legitimate differences he might have with the minister, the way he presented his way of thinking lacks clarity. Having said that Dagim’s response could not be different. He wrote “how do the protagonists of the drama materialize their game? They need pretexts. They also need governments which would serve without question. Hence they select and coddle some forces such as political parties, media and personalities from other walks of life … in short they need running dogs.” Such statement, I believe, could be written only by a political cadre. Other than a political cadre no thinking Ethiopian could imply any political parties, media and personalities who oppose the regime’s political belief are running dogs of the corporate interest. Such statement might make sense to the cheerleaders of the regime’s politics. To the rest it sounds a cadre doing his duty: throwing slogans as they are facts.

He (ato Redwan ) hate America because he is radical Muslim but, the only country Muslims people live free with democracy and freedom in America. However, you and EPRDF Muslim cadres haven’t good attitude for America. Moreover, those Muslim countries don’t want to allow build a church, and a temple in their country but do you know how many Ethiopian Muslims mosques in U.S.A they can build A Mosques in America and they have freedom to pray and teach their religious. Ato Redwan have you remembered Saudi Arabia has sent all Cristian Ethiopians Saudi Arabia’s jails because of they read Bible and prayed together. To sum up, please don’t propagate your issue by undercover of EPRDF

  6. Abebe says:

“A lack of capacity makes corruption possible, a lack of accountability makes corruption happen, and a lack of trust allows corruption to take root.” The Ethiopian “government” “controls the price of construction materials, access to finance, and access to equipment. It controls professional and company registrations. It maintains high-level, bilateral infrastructure deals with China and lacks independent performance audits.” According to the WB report, “Many stakeholders are concerned about the possibility of a connection between the dominant role of Chinese contractors in the road sector and high-level links between the Ethiopian and Chinese governments” and the “lack of effective competition, with Chinese contractors dominating the international market and a limited set of domestic contractors dominating the national market.” These problems are compounded by other factors such as poor quality control, weak enforcement of professional standards and overall lack of transparency. Professionals in the construction sector are reluctant to complain “for fear of being victimized” and believing there is no truly independent body to which they can appeal.” Since the “government is a major client”,
The planning and budgeting (P&B) process is the second area of high corruption in Ethiopia’s construction sector. “there is a reluctance to express dissent.”

The third area of corruption is found in management and performance monitoring .
The fourth area of corruption is manifest in the tendering and procurement (T&P) process.
The fifth area of corruption is manifest in the operations phase. Generally, contractors who have paid bribes to secure contracts “try to recoup his outlay during the construction phase.

The sixth area of corruption in the construction sector involves payment and settlement of certificates. A client “can fabricate a justification for refusing or withholding payment as “a means of punishing companies that have refused to honor understandings.”

The Ethiopian “government” is not only the single dominant construction client but also the singular policy maker and regulator of the construction sector. The “government” is in effect EthioConstruction Corruption, Inc. Though the WB report is timid in stating the facts as they are and frames the truth in the buttery language of bureaucratese, it is clear that the type of corruption in the Ethiopian construction sector covers the whole gamut including the policy making and budgetary process, project selection, tender specifications, procurement outcomes, contract negotiations and renegotiations and payments. It is manifest from the report that the bidding process is generally rigged and projects are often granted to companies that have more political ties to the ruling regime than qualifications. It is obvious that newcomers and those disfavored by the regime have little chance of securing public works project contracts. It is also manifest from the totality of the evidence in the report that public project money is ingenuously finds its way to the pockets of top Engineer turned politicians regime officials.

  7. Patriot says:

My main issue with some of the more aggressive NGO’s, and in particular those working in human rights is that they start from a wrong analysis of the causes of human right abuse.

It is true that a malign government persecuting it’s perceived or real enemies and using torture etc is a gross violation of the human rights both of the direct victims and, by it’s chilling effects on freedoms, the society at large. But even in this scenario the reasons that led a government of this kind forming in the first instance are more important than the name and personality of the particular dictator/government. I invite you to a thought experiment; can you imagine, in the UK, the chief of army suddenly announcing that he has deposed the government and taken the reins I’d power? It will not happen, will it?

More broadly human right abuse committed by government can only be a fraction of the offences to human dignity that take place on a daily bases in Ethiopia. A women terrorised and tortured by a jealous and ignorant husband, children robbed of childhood by poverty, the indignity of going hungry etc, I summit, are much the greater part, of the affront to human right and dignity in Ethiopia.

Poverty and ignorance are the chief causes of human right abuse, something the likes of HRW, do not acknowledge either in principle or deed. Listening and reading HRW, one is led to believe the only cause for human right violations is the ill will of the governing class. Not so, at least not the main cause.

The people fighting poverty and ignorance are the real human right defenders.

    • Gezaee says:

The cause of human right abuse is because of unelected and selfish self-electd leaders. It has nothing to do with poverty or lack of water or food. Abuse using the people to beg money and to live on it decades and claiming power by claiming your are elected? Human right abuse is caused by despotic, unelected leaders not by poverty or hunger or lack of rain or like of electricity or lack of water. Look EPRDF is ruling for 24 years now? The same people in the same office for 24 years? kkkkkkkkk, I am laughing? can you guys work and find other jobs than sticking yourself on the people’s back? can u live without Arat kilo? It is disgraceful few people in one office for 24 years? This is Gadafism. This is abuse sir. You sit for 24 years in one of by lying and claiming you are elected while no one elected you. I hate liers. You wanted to hide behind poverty?

      • Patriot says:

You are the perfect candidate for a ‘country expert’ role for Human Rights Watch. Urge you to apply Gezaee, your talents, I am sure will be most appreciated there.

      • Alula says:

        Gezaee
You are simply frustrated individual , who have no qualm at all!You have been barking here like a dog because of your own failure! Is there any political party ready to balance the political climate of Ethiopia ? No! Therefore, Mr Gezaee, these in power will be there for decades to come! Japan was led by one party for over 50 years to reach where it is now! South Korea , China , Taiwan , Singapore … Reached where they are now being led by one dedicated party like the EPRDFites, therefore , there is no party that can do better than the EPRDFites at this moment & in the foreseeable near future!
Take it easy though! Your age can’t sustain you to continue the way you are! If there won’t be responsible opposition party anytime soon , then the EPRDFites will continue to lead Ethiopia! Because they have paid so much to reach here & they can only transfer power in a respectful manner , to a responsible party. but not because a bunch of power hungry individuals are crying for power from every direction! Let the EPRDFites complete their GTP,GTP1,GTP2 & GTP3 …& we will see the next step!
        Take it easy Mr Gezaee!

        God bless Ethiopia!

        • Gezaee says:

How do you know my age? what does my age has to do with these? Why TPLF cadres run to attack personality ? Do not shout on me. I can not talk about you without knowing you. Talk about ideas, stay away from me please.

I did not care if EPRDF rules for 1000 years. The problem is not how long EPRDF rules. The problem is EPRDF aka TPLF is rotten with corruption and it is killing amhara ethnic group across the country. TPLF with OHddid has been killing , displacing amhara from day one up today. You love to stay long on power? That is problem you have man. Why is your regime attacking one tribe ? what do you want from the poor people? If Japaneses, Chinese ,… did rule long, they were not implementing apartheid classes like you. you are persecuting one ethnic group? why? Amhara has been killed, displaced, looted, humiliated, their dignity and human integrity violated, breached ? And yet you tell me you are better than other opposition? Is there any opposition that is chasing one ethnic group ? TPLF must be ashamed.

          • Alula says:

            Gezaee

You corrupted yourself & voted as an Eritrean citizen & you are talking about these who freed Ethiopia from the jaws of your Derg & in the process of making Ethiopia a middle income country! The government acknowledged there is corruption & they are working on it! If there is a fast development, at the same time there is a corruption! Read about North Korea , Singapore , China , Taiwan , Japan … In their early stages of development & you will find out too much corruption & how they solve it instead of driving yourself crazy!

You think nobody knows you & everything, right? Zib’es ya Entay do entay do eyom libelu? You have lost your mind at all! You are not normal! You can’t see things properly! I know woyane know you. & deprive you of any public office & you turned shabiya over night!
Remember: TPLF is here to stay for decades to come , finally it’s name will be kept in history books for good & politics will be left for the new generation! TPLF WILL be there until sound political party emerges! Do you understand ?You could see Ethiopia getting better & better every year! No space for haters!

  8. dafa says:

I find it difficult to believe that the writer of ‘wake up and smell the coffee’ would write such touchy article. But what the writer is saying is in general true.
Last year I had a disagreement with a person (white, young, about 25 years old)that says Ethiopia survives on foreign aid, and I answered him that if they only accept Ethiopia as their equal, visit the country as tourists, not as aid workers, invest in healthy industries, Ethiopians are much better off. The guy hates me since then.

I support building dams, cement factories, sugar factories, railways, etc. but it shouldn’t be politicized. We are actually far behind other countries in building the infrastructure. We have to invest in banking, highways (both for vehicles and information), etc. But we have to have civic institutions that act as check and balances for executive offices.
Please observe that the existence of strong civic institutions would help the executive offices to do their work properly and efficiently. We also need independent mass media, not government stooges. The governed need information to evaluate the performance of the government.
I don’t think the general populace care about who is sitting on the top government spot/chair, he/she could be anybody as long as he delivers results.

  9. Gezaee says:

Dear Dawit: why EPRDF or TPLF members or cadres fearful of using their name when they write an article? I have no interest to read a nameless article. Dear Dawit, it is un-professional to post articles with no or anonymous author. I wanted to the article but because it is nameless I could not read it. This tells tons about the integrity of the author. Why is she or he fearful of? I can only get scared off if I know I am doing something wrong or If I am not confident. At Ethiomedia, there is a nameless article and here I come another nameless article. EPRDF cadres write articles with Iraqi names, Nigerian names, …why? if they have integrity what are they afraid of ? Please Dawit, be professional and promote transparency, honestly, high integrity, faithfulness, high fidelity and faithful agent. You are an agent of communication between people and please do not allow incognito people to crowd your website. TPLF cadres have nothing to fear unless they are stealing something .

  10. kebrom says:

    Dear Dagim,

i am not sure what makes you that worry. I also see that, you read what Mr Ersasu wrote in hate, or with some sort of bias from the beginning. Otherwise, you must be Radiwan, or you must be assigned by him to takle this issue in particular.

I knew many government people who assign (based on some reciprocity) someone to write on their behalf.

You mentioned a point about our DERD. To be honest with you i am pro to it. But i really hate from heart why our government deny us talking over it. if this is my DAM and if i am the owner of it and if i am contributing my money (my meager salary) to it, why i was abused when i talk over the dam?! is this not the simplest chance i would have offered?

This is not to mean that i will support international rivers campaign. But why the government is toooooo much secretive as this dam is concerned? what was clear during the past 2 years is only asking my salary, nothing more and nothing less. I am happy in contributing my share, but why you guys and my government become nervous when some one talk about the dam. Why you immediately label these people as war mongers, slave of the west bla bla—!? Is it not my write or at least fair to ask for instance, who is supplying materials to the dam, how? who is monitoring such supply?. There are several rumors saying the old thief, EFORT not Ethiopian people is still benefiting the lion share, and in the expense of all other companies and all of us. Why is some one have to be blamed when he or she raise this issue, when you/ the government is happy to collect my money.

I donot care if EFORT is part of the construction (it has to), but who is EFORT and to whom it belong? is tplf still not feeling like wild party when it is a government for more than 20 years, leading such a great people? aren’t the few tops elites using EFORT to create, accumulate and elicit our money?!

I may not that worried if they accumulate money, but where is it accumulated? can you shade a bit of light where did Meles (the evil man, you call it visionary, i never) get the 3 bilion USD??? this is Ethiopia a country of hungry people! Do u not accepting we are the second from the last, or you feel that Oxford university is a lair, so that they fabricate data? for what?! to get what?! they are not etv or Ethiopian security man!

Is it not we are getting poorer and remain poor becuase our money is elicited by our own leaders? Tell me what about if i feel that GERD is just a means to still collect money from our pocket and damp it outside for their children??? what type of security are you going to give me?

You would have wrote on such issues if you are true son of people, but you are an assigned labor of radiwan.

    Kifu tanagiralachihu!

  11. wedi Akulegzay says:

@Gezae, no one should be fearful of using his/her name. But the name Gezaee is another pseudo name. Your real name seems Tesfalidet or Bokretsion. I know you are from Akulegzay, what are u doing here? Why don’t you go to those websites http://www.asmarino.com, http://www.eastafro.com and http://www.awate.com? What an irony?

  12. dafa says:

    Some more opinion:
    1. To the writer: You seem to be bright, with fertile mind. Use it for good cause. While we are talking here, people are dying from bad leadership. Use your talent to help those in dire need, it is more beneficial when it is used for good cause (after all nobody gives you a medal for writing a good article online, or for overpowering your opponents with extraordinary philosophy, blah blah).
    2. For readers: Yes, there is a general consensus that says the EPRDF is corrupt, the leaders are stupid and arrogant, worse, the government covert operators murder people with impunity. Yet, we can’t walk away from our people. If our fate is to die by the hands of our brothers that work for the government, so be it. It is much better than living in foreign land as a second class citizen. We, actually, haven’t mounted enough challenge that would force the incumbent leaders to stop and think. We don’t want what happened in Libya happen in our country, where the leader/king receives a dagger in his private part at the conclusion of the revolution. We benefit from slow and smooth transition.

  13. Gezaee says:

Wedi, dumb arse hole. I do love Eritreans as Ethiopians. For me it does not matter whether I am from Akulegzay or Ogaden. I see your little brain only thinks about awraja or woreda or ethnic or whatever TPLF has thought u. There is nothing that makes it special if I go to the website u are referring me. But you are really sick person. We are galaxies apart and you are not at my level. You are behind time. I do not have time to think by place of birth or by awraja or woreda or ethnic or tribe. You really do not qualify to get this response. But you are one of the TPLF nameless cadres who known for hiding themselves behind pc and writing articles with broken English with muslim nick name, Nigerian nick name. Gezaee is my real name, it is not Gezae, it is Gezaee, do not twist my name to fit your twisted brain. I have never come across TPLF cadres who can think beyond tribe or awraja or woreda or kebele. All you know is about derg, ethnic and tribe, nothing else. Shame. Instead of giving reasons, and argue with reasons you came up with akulegzay or x, y,z. You are worthless fela. This is why I hate TPLF cadres. All they are good at is hiding themselves and deceiving, lying, cheating, corruption, murdering, … you are primitive and backward, it will not be easy to educate you. 21. Sam says:

There is a stark difference between the two articles of Dagim’s. His recent one is mild in tone, and reasonably argued. I wonder a person who could argue rationally, although I and he do not agree with the substance of his argument, why he chose to present his case the way he did in his first article. That was past. I welcome the current. Here is one of Dagim’s argument I found not to be convincing. He wrote “Western policymakers criticize and deny funding to Ethiopia’s development path precisely because it is State driven. This in fact is not by preference per se, but by necessity. For given its size capacity and above all its attraction to only areas of quick return, the private sector cannot be expected , at least not at this stage, to invest in what economist refer to as public goods.” That is a debate still being discussed even in USA. The Democratic party argues government has the obligation to do public goods in which the private sector do not dare to invest because of no “quick return” in the horizon. The current Republican party sees government as a problem, not a solution. But the Ethiopian situation Dagim uses to justify his argument is misleading. No reasonable Ethiopian argued a project like GERD should be financed by private sector. The argument made was the government involvement in every economic activity which should be left to the private sector squeezed out private investors out of the market. A government which wholly controls economic activity will have a populace dependent on the goodwill of the government for economic mobility. A population who are dependent on the government guidance of the economy had a bitter experience. The former USSR serves as an example. China could not be an example. Despite having a one party rule, the Chinese economy practiced free market economy for decades now. The reasoning the Ethiopian government uses China being its model is very misleading to say the least. True, big projects might not be financed by private sectors because of having no possible quick profit. But I argue had the telecommunication, water, electricity, sugar and many other sectors been privatized, the current rationing of services in Ethiopia would not have happened. At any time I trust private investors to do better than government bureaucrats.

  22. Gezaee says:

Dear Dawit: why you do not post anything on the GERD dam? That is my favourite topic. As I indicated last time, FM TA has now already sold the abay to Egypt. He signed agreement accepting the current amount Egypt uses which means FM TA has signed the colonial agreement on Thursday,on the slide of the AU meeting. Ethiopians all of you now keep quiet when the man is signing agreement that deny Ethiopia its natural resources. There is no solution apart from removing woyane because woyane loves signing papers and may be it is because woyanes did not know paper. Now the Egyptians has got what they were looking for, to trick Ethiopia and make it sign a trap paper signed by its corrupt leaders. FM TA has sold the dam and the people of Ethiopia and this is the ultimate agenda of woyane. There is no anything good in woyane house. it is a house of signing away Ethiopian land, port, water, people and whatever Ethiopians. This is the woyane agenda of destroying Ethiopia and its people in the name of cooperation. Down to woyane curse of the century.

@billfree the brave and great warriors from Tigray and other parts of Ethiopia fought to get rid of derg and help you to come out of your mother closet to speak freely ….remember where you been hiding in derg times…the irony you still insult TPLF in support of your butcher and solely out of hatred to the great people of Tigray…But brave people love others that what TPLFites did!

  26. robel says:

@sam , the stereotype in your argument is vividly funny, and evidently your showing the typical hypocrisy of some of our i-know-all brothers. If you touch on the widely debated large government debate and how China benefited in real terms, you would have justified the infant Ethiopian economy and its possible growth through time…did china achieve this development overnight or for that matter in 2 decades?….MIN TADERGEWALEH yours is a world of hypocrates and big ego

  27. sam says:

robel I cannot answer for your feedback. There is nothing to response. I cannot make head and tail from your writing what you want to say. By the way I do not remember comparing Ethiopia and China. China should not serve as an example does not mean I am comparing the two countries. You have the right to disagree with me. When you do, please, please. try to know what you are disagreeing with me about.

    • robel says:

@sam if you are engaged in conversation for the sake of argument that is fine, but please don’t misread what I said…you claim Ethiopia don’t fit to china model, and concluded that Dagim’s and Ethiopian Economists’ argument as futile… my friend this is called Nagative Comparison.

If you are an Economic genius with some new solution to the challenge of our 90 million people , just show us where Ethiopia mis-stepped in pursuit of China’s proven footstep before its too late. …. i think now you got the head and tail of my argument …Please ,please , please ,please don’t misread others

  28. First and foremost, I love you all brothers & sisters; as we all are from the same source, we like it or not! Coming back to my point, we all are human beings, we all are selfish, of course there is a clear difference at the level of it. This is the point we need to address; in my opinion. When I read and listen to speeches, briefings, and comments. I didn’t come across to a speech or comment from both side, which relentlessly strive to thread together the two antagonistic views together. This needs courage and selfless behavior in which we lack at most. We all needs to work our home work in this issue. After all, all has left the ‘self’ that they were working for it never to come back again to the politics, religion, economics… alas….So pleas let’s wake up,not with a coffee, but with the idea saying ‘selfless.’ Let’s heal each other alongside with the transformation and development. After all as we have seen it in other countries, all big developments and infrastructures will fall in a matter of one day civil war. We don’t need this to happen in our country and all our efforts to be in vain. I am not saying there is no bigotry, corruption, impartiality and so on, but these and other unmentioned problems in our country will minimize, if we all come back to ourself and transform and develop to be ‘selfless.’ So that we all have a country & people we love.
    GOD BLESS ETHIOPIA!
    GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

  30. Sam says:

robele, you just pushed me so hard to make me poke a big hole in the euphoria you are happy to live with. There is nothing to compare between China and Ethiopia save one. Both countries run by a single party. Let me point out the two country differences. First, when the China government started to embrace free market economy, Chinese intellectuals in the diaspora rushed back home to be part of the new China. In Ethiopia, after EPDRF came to power intellectuals have started running from the country whenever the opportunity prevails. This is important, roble, a country which is deficient in intellectuals do not progress as you wish it to be. By the way I believe the world wealth has been created largely by human brains, not labor. Second, the Chinese government has cultivated Chinese nationalist feelings among its people. In Ethiopia, thanks to EPDRF we are reduced to be a collection of tribes. This is very important too. When Ethiopians are encouraged to identify themselves by the ethnic group they came from, the Chinese, however, did not allow this backward ideology to make roots in the billion plus population they have. Third, The Chinese are very self-dependent. They believed in themselves. They did not allow foreigners to buy their fertile lands. The EPDRF government in the contrary does seem to believe giving fertile lands to Indians will make Ethiopia in the camp of the middle income countries in the near future. Fourth, the Chinese embrtaced market economy wholeheartedly. EPDRF did not, and will not. Why will not? Because the EPDRF politicians know a free market economy will free Ethiopians from not to be dependent of the government. The EPDRF politicians adore making the population dependent on them: a population on leash. I could go on and on, but I think this is enough for today.

  31. robel says:

@sam is that all what you got? You got it wrong again brother ,you trying to summarize what you wish and add some wrong facts here.

Error 1 :Chinese brain drain has been the highest during the last 6 decades of its development, Leaders such as Deng Xiaoping , encouraged Chinese to learn abroad starting back in the 1970s , to their disappointment out of the 1.5 million brain drain only few returned. Its only after the 2008 world financial crisis they got influx of brain gain

Error 2 : Chinese Han tribe constitutes 92% of China, its not like what you claim that they some how delete others identity….It makes you sick to your core but Ethiopia is united collection of diverse brothers and sisters

Error 3: In China millions has been killed to grab land from land owners let alone lease to others….China is buying about 5% of Ukrain land , what are you talking about?

  32. Sam says:

I thought I and robel would have achieved some understanding after my last feedback. Man Was I wrong? He wrote I “got it all wrong.” To remedy my deficiency in having the right information he put out his. Let us look what they are according to the way he presented them. First, he penned “Chinese brain drain has been the highest during the last 6 decades.” Here it is prudent to inform my friend China did not embrace market economy for the last six decades. At the time the Chinese communists became aware their five years plan under Communism was a path to nowhere some Chinese were having education in Europe and North America. A significant number of them returned home. Not all. But a very significant number of them. Could my friend name just ten Ethiopian intellectuals who returned home after EPDRF came to power? I know my friend will have a hard time naming two. The most important point here is after China embraced market economy Chinese students keep coming to Europe and North America, and yes, they returned home. Could my friend name a few intellectuals who came to the mentioned continent during the EPDRF reign and went back home. We do not burden my friend asking answers which he does not have. We let it pass. Second, he wrote the “Chinese Han tribe constitutes 92% China.” Meaning there is no need to have nations and nationalities mass rally every two weeks or so. I disagree. The number does not matter. It is the concept. The Chinese does not believe one tribe is the very reason for the other tribe’s misery. Well, our politicians thought you bury the “Amhara Timket” everything is going to be OK. I do not think it has happened the way they thought would be. Yes, the Amharas has been kept being the bunching bags, driven out from every corner of Ethiopia, but the having of understanding between ethnic groups live only in the mind of the EPDRF’s politicians. Among the people it sow mistrust. Could my friend remember the late Prime Minster warning if kinjit would have won ethnic cleansing was a sure thing to come propaganda. He said this after the nations and nationalities made millions of rallies telling us their new-found friendship, and the Prime minster was fifteen years in power. Even today, the EPDRF politicians say if we are not in power, Ethiopia will be no more. Meaning the ethnic groups slash each other throat if we are not in power. What happened the nation and nationalities mass rally promised us to happen.Where goes our new-found understanding of each other? Third, He wrote China has no land to lease. Meaning Ethiopia does, and he implied I am to be happy for that. No my friend, I am not happy. First, he used the word “lease” loosely. I do not call giving a land for ninety-nine years for a penny a lease. I see it the new form of colonization. A colonization in which the colonized nation leaders agreed for.

  33. robel says:

@sam I don’t see any good reasoning and evidence in your comment brother. Sorry to say this , Please please re-read my previous comment and just google the evidence. U r not the first to err so get over it and move on brother…
