US calls on the Ethiopian government and protestors in Oromia to address legitimate grievances through constructive dialogue
Awramba Times (Addis Ababa)- The United States government expressed its deep concerns over recent clashes in the Oromia region of Ethiopia that reportedly have resulted in the deaths of numerous protestors, US State Department said in a statement.
Mark Toner, Deputy Spoksperson of the State Department expressed his condolences [on behalf of the US government] to the families of those who have lost their lives, in a press statement sent to Awramba Times.
The statement called upon the government of Ethiopia and the protestors in some parts of the Oromia region to address legitimate grievances through constructive dialogue.
“the government of Ethiopia has stated publicly that the disputed development plans will not be implemented without further public consultation” said the deputy spoksperson. “we support the government of Ethiopia’s stated commitment to those consultations and urge it to convene stakeholders to engage in dialogue as soon as possible” the statement added.
