Awramba Times (Addis Ababa) – Ethnic tensions are becoming common in several regions of today’s Ethiopia and those tensions are affecting university education, as placent of freshman students in government higher educational institutions throughout the nation is decided by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Seb–Hidri Civil Society of Tigray, a local civic organ based in Mekelle in its statement said, following the large-scale anti-government riots throughout the nation since 2016, several Tigrian university students had been killed, oppressed, terrorized, detained, beaten and gang-raped, due to their ethnic background in several universities of Oromia and Amhara regions.
According to the civil society, even though the primary mandate of safeguarding the life and security of the students belong to the federal government, neither the federal government authorities nor the local administrators were able to ensure their safety.
As part of measures to remedy to those ethnic clashes in the last academic year, that led to deaths and mass displacements, the organization suggested to concerned federal and regional government bodies that Tigria university students has to be placed in universities located in their respective region.
