Awramba Times (Addis Ababa) – Ethiopian government has “pardoned” Ethiopian and Swedish journalists jailed for organizing a “terrorist” network and assisting “outlawed” rebel groups including banned political opposition party, Ginbot 7.

According to Awramba Times sources, Editor Woubshet Taye, Reporter Martin Schibbye, Photographer Johan Persson, opposition leader Zerihun Gebregziabher and Hirut Kifle will be released today in the eve of the Ethiopian new year.

“These journalists submitted their petition to the late Prime Minister before June and … (President Girma Woldegiorgis) arrived at a decision to grant pardon to them,” Berhan Hailu, Justice Minister told journalists today.

“Within 24 hours they have to leave the country.” Birhanu added.

The so-called pardon was approved before the death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, a couple of months ago.

  4. The life cycle of the oppostion politicians

Join Oppostion party memeber or Oppostion journalist then jailed… then ask for pardon…..then exiled.

On this life cyle I could mention dozens of oppostion politicians and journalists

Unlike the Sewdish journalists, Ethiopians will come soon to join the dysfunctional oppostion camp in the Daispora and for sure will open a web site or blog…called Addis times, Akaki times and son on.

Hope Esikender, Reyote and Andualem will follow the foot step of their fellows after a year or so. The key note here is the Ethiopian government will jail and weakend the oppostion to their last drop of political sprit and finally export them like any cheap commodities to the dysfunctional and hatred-filled daispora communities where they ensure their final death.

I really appreciate the Ethiopian government how nicely it is playing trick politics. The oppostions are deeply sedated and looked to be aware of their environment.
I wish I could be coopted with EPRDF

  6. Dawit Dawit Dawit, you seem disappointed. Were you wishing your colleague Wubishet to stay in jail? I am yet to read any mention of we at Awrambatimes are pleased to announce that,,,,,,
My hope is that he had time to reflect and come out as a better and genuine journalist.

    • Hermy….I couldn’t get ur message or u haven’t get the idea of the news. What is ur ground to say that Dawit is not happy by their release? Have he said that I wish if webshet could stay longer?? Please, let’s not be confused and try not to confuse others too. I would like to mention one thing, those journalists knew and love each other morethan anybody else. They knew what price they paid and they knew how they r suffering in jail with nothing. Anyways,I will suggest u to read the news as many times as u have.

  10. How do you know the pardon was approved by Meles. Did your sources inform you or you made this up so that people will not think that changes are coming under the dictatorship of Hailemariam?

Realizing political pensioners is a good start for the newly appointed woyane dictators to slow down the social movement. The people of Ethiopia demands many issue:

-Discussions should be conducted in a spirit of acceptance and mutual respect, and would underpinned by a shared commitment to a coordinated, national, regional and truly comprehensive process of accountability and reconciliation in Ethiopia.
-All political parties, both at a national and regional level weather based inside the country or exiled, must make it a priority to articulate a shared concept of reconciliation so as to secure a common
framework for all future initiatives and discussions.
-Political, military, and civilian leaders must look beyond their own specific interests and be seen to represent all Ethiopians equally, regardless of their religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation.
-The suffering of the Ethiopian people caused by the crimes of the current regime, including genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Ethiopian population in Gambella , Oromia , Somali and Amhara Regions…………etc.. should be stopped for once and the last time.
-Financial and administrative corruption must be eliminated from the government, and structures must be introduced to provide oversight and accountability as part of the reconciliation process.
-As an important foundation for a reconciliation process, the Ethiopians army and security services must be rebuilt as a truly national force, representing equitably all components of the Ethiopian people, while respecting human rights so as to ensure it is never again used as a means of oppressing the Ethiopians people.
-Citizenship, acceptance, and respect for Ethiopian’s religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity should be taught in all educational institutions as a means of promoting national identity and reconciliation.

  15. Happy New Year,

I wish all Ethiopian a peace and prosperous year to come and Unity above all!

I would like to comment the best thing for Ethiopian politics to make any kind of progress, the parliament has to be free from eritrean descendents and any eritrean nationals. Unless we are open and free to discuss what kind of course our country is taking and what need to be done in our politics to face the challenges and to quell the disturbance of infeltrators and to focusing our issue in the country. We have to have a political system that keep the integrity of our political system that’s free from enemy both inside and outside.

We have to make free ourselves from outsiders and have a unified country regardless of religon and ethnicity those I mean Ethiopians. We can’t aford to include eritreans or any other none Ethiopia. Be honest and defend our country we have listened time after time how the enemy was within the party line that was passing secrets of information to destroy our military. We have to defend our country and be honest and challenge those who think otherwise. We can’t continue pretending the problem doesn’t exist…

Peace in Ethiopia, Happy New Year!
