A cease-fire between Hamas and Israel has come into effect
Awramba Times (Phoenix, AZ) – A ceasefire between Hamas and Israel has come into effect after eight days of violence that has left more than 140 Palestinians and five Israelis dead.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid tribute to U.S. diplomacy and to the leadership of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, but also to Israel’s resolve and the armed forces. “I am proud to be your prime minister,” he said.
Prior to the ceasefire, US President Barack Obama spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and commended him for agreeing to the Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire with the Hamas.
“The President expressed his appreciation for the Prime Minister’s efforts to work with the new Egyptian government to achieve a sustainable ceasefire and a more durable solution to this problem,” the White House said in a statement after the telephone call between the two leaders.
During the call, Obama said that the US would use the opportunity offered by a ceasefire to intensify efforts to help Israel address its security needs, especially the issue of the smuggling of weapons and explosives into Gaza.
According to the White House, Obama expressed his appreciation for Netanyahu’s efforts to work with the new Egyptian government to achieve a sustainable ceasefire and a more durable solution to this problem.
Later, Obama also spoke with his Egyptian counterpart, Mohamed Mursi, and commended him for his effort on negotiating the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
