Why in the first place Ethiopian elites unite?
I have never seen a hypocrite like Dr.Messay, he preaches about democracy and creating an Ethiopia tolerating differnt views and opinions…at same time wished every oppostions and Ethiopian elites to gather in one basket..
By the very nature democracy is all about tolerating different views, nothing less or nothing more…
It is a pitty..What are these Ethiopian elites are becoming

    • Dandew says:

      Eden,
Take a sit and learn. Aynawta nesh. Kefo neger. Lengeru endetim binegerish aygebashim.

    • Kelemu says:

You are right eden. This one time Derg cadre has his starting premise wrong. Ethiopian elites do not consider the current regime as their arch foe. Only few like Messay consider it as an arch enemy. Others are moderately opposed to it. Still others support the current leadership. Hence this man will go on a circle for his whole life and end up with no answer.

Don’t lose hope eden. This man is not a representative of Ethiopian elites.

      • Dandew says:

        Kelemu,
That is what you want to believe. Your detachment from reality is so amazing. Contrary to what you say the giant prof’s views represent very well the heart and minds of the majority. You are just making last minute agonal movements in an attempt to give legitimacy to your very narrow gotegna bandit. The ppl have said no unequivocally. You idiot racist.

  2. freethinker says:

After I saw the video, I felt sad that I wasted my time, and become hopeless on some Ethiopian diaspora intellectuals, No clarity, No directions, No substance, no close to the reality of Today’s Ethiopia. poor communication skill. poor debate style. No wonder they couldn’t have a single dent or influence on Ethiopian political life at least for the last 22 years though they said so much and forecast so many dooms
Now, A professor of Philosophy is calling people with different view an ENEMY. I didn’t continue to read, I promise my self not to waste my time again on this individual.

  3. A.T. says:

This Guy is a Prof.? What a simplistic adulterated writing! …I couldn’t understand what he is trying to say…he do not make any sense. Is it just me?

I do not consider my self highly educated…..but I am sure this paper is not worth a grade “D” for a high school paper.

    This is really Sad!

  4. Gezaee says:

    Dear Prof. Messay,

The problem is not only woyane; the main problem is those are not woyane. If we where united, loved, respected each other, woyane would not have any power to do anything. All woyane could do was say yes and okay. Look, how Morsi was finished in one day. Why would not landlock Ethiopia if we did not accept it? we accept every rubbish and we hate each other and woyane divide us and they think everything they do is right. No one can challenge them. Who should we blame? Woyane? no, I blame diaspora, some amhara elites who are have no the gut to work other people. The problem is those who created woyane and others and those who are still working for woyane without their knowledge. Example diaspora, check all the websites, none of them promote Ethiopianism. All of them promote racism, ethnicism. All of them. There is no single website that is not racist or ethnicist. May be Awramba time is one. But Awramba is being attacked by two camps: woyane camp and diaspora amhara camp. You have to be with them or with other. You do not recognize others. Their attitude is only me, only us? be our slaves, otherwise, you are their enemy.

I do not blame woyane at all. I know woyane would not have choice but to listen to the people if the people were united and had love. How many faction do we have? if we believe in one Ethiopia and with equality? Amhara, oromo, tigrai, gurage,… all need the same thing: food, water, housing,… why all these 100s of factions for the same need or to address the same problem?

We just blame woyane; first woyane is the by product of the old apartheid system. They know apartheid only. You can not harvest what you did not sow. Ethiopia has never been affaire nation to its citizens. The tplf, olf, onlf,… came to exist because of repression in the past. We can not say they did not have causes.

We have to move forward and form a new all inclusive civil movement. I do not see any other options. That is the only way. We can not keep on blaming each other forever. There is no end. We need to start something somewhere than lamenting day and night about past, present by accusing woyane or even the past regimes. There is no point to be stuck in the past and present. We need to work out a national agenda.

  5. teshome says:

This article has fragmented thought, more over it had a completely dissociation from the title. The title speaks one thing and inside of the article another….There starts the problem of Ethiopian elites, they think one think and speak and write different.
Dear professor, why should the Ethiopian elites shoulder your hate infected politics and unite around your suggestions. This is quite impossible by any stretch of imagination, all the Ethiopian elites to think an identical politics to be considered right as by this Professor.
This time around professor, it was simply a good try but didn’t completely work for you. I prefer to read your usual hatred concept politics, would please write more about it. I really entertained such foolish writings.

  6. Alegnta says:

Flawed analysis, simplistic, some truth but also full of assumptions not based on facts! The result is a flawed and defeatist conclusion “One thing is sure, though: the best that the defeated generation and perhaps their immediate descendant can do is to take a hard critical look at themselves and exchange their ambition to remain makers of history for the much more subdued role of midwife of the coming repaired generation.” The thing that annoys me is that you call yourselves “elites” – there are millions of elite Ethiopians who think better than these bunch of hypocrite, power hungry sell-out so called “elites”.

  7. GS says:

Absolutely useless. Years ago (1982), I got a “C” in Messay’s philosophy class maxsist lennenist blah blah stuff in AAU. Never liked it and it was forced upon all students. I am glad people like him are out of ethiopia. One day he will write a scholarly article entitled “how to cover yourself with facade of scholarism when you don’t have anything useful to say”.

    • YYTT says:

LOL! I didn’t have the opportunity to go to an Ethiopian University but often wondered what the lecturers are like.

  8. Sisay A says:

The answer is a big Ego problem. the thinking of i am better than all or i know for you thinking.

to work together and to talk about ethiopia you guys (the elite’s) start to put your self as ordinary ethiopian.

Let alone the educated once even those of us who are been out of ethiopia for 6 month think we know better that the rest of 80 million ethiopians back home.

That is the big diaspora problem b/c you been driving a taxi abroad or washing a dish doesn’t make you to know it all.

and the Elliot’s problem in diaspora is working with people. there is no compromising in diaspora you have to be supporter or opposition. that is it

hate it or love it is the choice.

so unless the attitude of our thinking in diaspora changed it will continue the same with the elite’s in the top.

  10. Aster says:

With all the respect to Prof. Messay, I would like to disagree with his statement or questions regarding why Ethiopian elites don’t like to work together. I think most Ethiopian elites are working together already. If you are talking about Birhanu and other like him. I think you are misusing the word elites.

  11. galaxy says:

You are dreaming about how to remove ‘a common enemy, tplf’. Egypt is preparing to dismantle Ethiopia.
The military junta is making all preparations to attack Ethiopia

  12. Supernova says:

You all narrow entities; Prof. Messay much better than all of you. Khadiwoch, leboch. Who are to point fingers on him? He did nothing wrong for the country as you did. Leba acherbari hula. Degmo afachu tkftalachu? Dedeboch. you landlocked 94 million people. you sold the land of the poor people. you stole 12 billion dollars in the past 12 years; Yet you have the gut to accuse and blaspheme this intelligent Prof? You better stop pointing fingers on others, bastards

    • galaxy says:

… I have listned to his opinions in the video. He is simoly racist. He never recoginzes the Ethiopian peoples interest. For him people means ??????. for him the somalia, the afr, the gambela, the south peoples, the gurage etc are not people.
I heard him dreaming ‘how to return the derge style of governance’ ‘democratically’. That means he is dreaming to bring demolish the federal style and then instal the unitary government. This is simply impossible?

  13. Nebiyyu Solomon says:

The professor is shamelessely lying to our face by claiming that western education and the tplf brought fragmentation of elites and the previousely harmonius and unified culture.

Unlike the totalitarian centralized unitary political dictatrship of the past amara system Mesay is currently missing too much, at least Ethiopians have now a rudimentary and imperfect Federal System of Governace that is potentially very useful to attend to the diversities and inequalities of that diverse multination state.

Leaving typical mara rehterics aside after all even Mesay himself is western educated living in the west writing miles after miles of redundant self serving typically amara propaganda seeking to unite all the nations and nationalities in Ethiopia around amara ideology.

It is true that tplf uses divide and rule tactics to stay in power but the method is not tplf created but amara designed and implemented chauvinst and primitive political system based on divide, exclude, exploit and rule method.

During king Haile Selassie’s amara rule Tigrians and Oromos were secretely hearded together at the Meskel square in Addis Ababa during yearly Mesqel celebrations and made to fight each other violently through the manipulations and active provocations of the regime’s plain cloth police and security forces and through that promoting inter ethnic hatrade.

During the amara rule there were not ethnic groups other than the amara Ethinic superior and civilizing ethnic group calling itself Ethiopians.

During that time a certain TV journalist interviewed a few shew amara ruling circles to tell him the number of total ethiopian population in their opinion. “There are many who would like to call themselves Ethiopians but we the true Ethiopians are only about 3000 persons” was their response.

This example shows as to how narrow and self serving exclusionsts some these amara elites like
Mesay can be. What they say and what they do are often in direct contradiction and in total conflict, thereby causing the same fragmentations he is talking about.

  14. w.yilma says:

speaking nonsense and be a practical person (I do not say intellectual, because it is too far for them to use this word) is completely different. He can speak but the reality is different. He can speak nonsense for the rest of his life. Some of the 60’s and 70’s generation is a cancer for this country. Unless they expired they will never and ever give peace to the country which spend a considerable amount of time and money to educate them. Unfortunately the majority are biting their mother breast! he is one of them. It would have been better for this guy to look toward himself.

  15. axumawe says:

1st i well say this last time my writing didn’t go thru when both prof,es have debated.
i agree with prof Tekola in his libral point of views,in the political, economical & social aspect of Ethiopia. as i said it time & again “freedom know” slogan is not going to work in Ethiopia .this is my point of view.
my 2nd point is to wards prof mesay.
with all due respect prof. tank good you are not the leader of a party !
we can see the desperation & anger to wards woyanes (TPLF)clearly.it is ok, it is your opinion, but be fair & honest in your words don’t be baist,
i well stated my observation from your comment.
you say in your previous respond pm meles is surounded by his etnic groups (TPLFS)this is a lie proofs!
    is pm h.m.d tegre ?
    is vpm.demek mekonen tegre ?
    is addisu legese tegre ?
    is kuma medeksa tegre ?
    is breket smon tegre?
    is abadula tegre ?
    is sophian ahmed tegre ?
i can go on & on be fair based in your position you are a profsor for the love of god !!!!!!!!!!!
in this article you said the humileating defeat of the elites of the 60 & 70,is the result of, to days Ethiopia.
it is only in your own mind, and your likes mind only to be spcifc exepte the extrime amhara diasporas others gave the benefit of doubt to the government of Ethiopia,b/c go back to the time you left Ethiopia and look how far we came !
haven say this, i don’t mean Eprdf is perfect.but one to judge other one needs to show his/her true identity, not rdricks,or slogan, not heat-love,not disrespect, but compassion, apressasion of the sacrefies & the life of the follne Ethiopians in general as un Ethiopian scholar or phd. but steel you are intitel for your opinion.
i believe your opinion won’t take as any where! b/c your view is extrime & have no place in to days Ethiopia.also i be live we can’t import western democracy or extrem wright lebrallsum in to smi-feudal Ethiopia, this is the fact in the ground, but as prof Tekola sugsted every Ethiopian educated or non educated needs to have the love of our country be for our Egostic wishes or power dreams.
in my opinion yes we need change, but that change needs to come from each of as, as individuals.then we are able to do our part to our country, but heepen & yaapen rdrickes only to serve our ego to pro-clame i am phd,iam a docter and so on.
profsor,in the mind of our people if he/she is a doctor, that means he/she knows every thing!!!! you know what i mean? doctor means next in line after good in the old feudal Ethiopia not any more !! animal doc is a doc too,it is the job descrbetion period no better or less than every ordinary human being but what we live behind well live a legucie after we are gone!you may not swolowe this, but look at the dinomic leader ship of his hines pm melese zenawe!!you & me can’t fool the eye witness of Ethiopia.
you know prof, talking is cheep!for people like yous with intelctual mind you should pay your doos to your country,b/c you owe your people that debut.un pied debut!be good example to others i belive your political ambeshen seems collaps from your own conclusion, but you can redim your self from side line poltican, in the feture.
the other opinion you raisde is etnic division,
i have this q for you mesay who says Ethiopia belongs to the amhara ?
i remember when i was a kid to this matter when i live in Ethiopia every government post was filed with amharas exepsionaly few tegres & other traibes, but majority of woredas, awrajas & kefle hagers are governed by amharas.
but look at know. no more amhara ruls in his/her etnic area. the superiorityof amhara is gone,i love it, and every Ethiopian loves it too, what is wrong with selfe rule(selfe govern)look at where you are 52 steats 52gevernors one precdent.where i live 14 provinces,14primers on pm,what is wrong with yous???what is the fessss about it ??? of coures the amharas may not like it but some one like you who preches about democracy & freedom won’t agree means some thing.what do you say mr’ phd ? with all due respect prof,
    personaly i don’t believ in atrocity,anarcithm,hepocracy,mis-juctes
separation & division at all but we may care fully see where we are heading.there is a price for every thing we wish for,b/c Ethiopia well never go back word.also every person have a loving mom & dad, brother & sister.
when the extremest brhanu nega is getting ready to desteblizing Ethiopia & terror i hope he well send his chilldrend.b/c every Ethiopians are done with war.
as they say kes b kes enkulal b egru yhedal !
it is a good begning prof, but it is not easy like you wonted it look at where you reside the u.s.a, Canada they exersies democratic rule for over 137 & 200 years but steel so many erores,in the other hand EPRDF only 39 years old lets give them the crerdet they desrve.
tanx!!!!! above all they erned it from the Ethiopian people long live EPRDF,SALUT!!!!

  16. Dinqnesh says:

    axumawe,

Please tell us as to who are the exclusive top leadership of the army and exclusive top owners of the entire economy of Ethiopia with the monopoly of state policy intiation and excution to run the whole contry. Mentioning house slaves forced to dance at the drumming of the tplf does not change or fool anyone. Soon the world will come to arrest the whole gang for robbing national and international funds and behaving like an outlaw state.

  17. Hotto says:

I know this three fools…only they know is criticize but they r not good in taking criticize

But I will try to give them not critic but advice.

First three of them r over 70 years old my question is when they going to pass the torch to the next generation

Next three of them over weight by 50kg my question is this show luck of self control so when they going to lose 50kg because it is also health is and we don’t want promote unhealthy eating.

The natural question next would be r three of them support the ideology of freedom before food… ( mind u for them it might much need diet )

Next question is the interview itself is like of luck fire because one guy this moderate republican the other guy is far left republican regardless both opposed meles rule … What should be happened is u invite die hard meles supporter and the two clown otherwise this is make believe interview

Next when we focus on the video recoding u need to buy video stand.. And the mic where good quality but the two guest hold the Mac all the time when there time come to speak they already tired and they hold the Mac far from their mouth..

Lighting outside recording the easiest way to get good lighting … First find where the light coming and u give ur back to the light source..imagine flash light u have to be behind flash light to get light or the flash light must come from ur back…

If u wonder I didn’t finished the video because I am tried of this kind of people… I don’t know the truth about the Addis Ababa prof. Someone should ask him if he was involved in sex with student while he were in addis university.. At that time teacher abused their power to get sex so some one should invest get this guy before we trust him… I am not saying he did it but he must be asked if he have any knowalage about other teach involving in sex with student and if he denounce it or not.

  18. idris says:

Top mistakes in dr messay’s speech and paper
    1) Calling the current government TPLF and common ‘enemy’
    2) his happiness with Death of our respected PM.
3)he is opting for a derge style governance. forcing people to align to the vision of some group forcefully. forcing them to forget their religion, culture, langauge etc
    4) he has no any solution for people’s questions e.g. oromo
5)he do not recogize other people except his own.
    5) he is racist. becuase i heard him saying the current government selects only tigrians to position. while top positions PM, Deputy PM, Defence minister and other are occupied by others. It is only FM that is from the mentioned region.
    6) speaking as if only the amhara is opperessed by the current government. he did not care about others.
    7) he is hopeless. he belives that Ethiopia is already divided, and he does not see any solution for that.
    8) but more than anything he is detached from the actual reality in Ethiopia.
He may be more than 25 years living abroad. so how can he understand the situation in ethiopia?

poor professor messay. Ethiopia is in its strongest state, do not be hopeless

I appreciate professor Tocola’s principle. Step-by-step improvements. I can understand how much you love your country, professor. Thank you very much
I also appreciate ato Yared Tibebu for the excellent and scholarly questions he raised. the questions also reflect his ideas. bravo ato Yared.
But overall the discussion was fine. it helps us to identify who is who? we have identified who are on Ethiopia’side irrespective of their personal interest.

  19. Solomon Tebebu says:

Well written paper! The political precipice that the elites are inching towards is actually also moving towards them. You summoned it very well what has been ailing the political elites/activists for decades. Not too surprisingly these facts are well known by all sides. Surprisingly though, even so unfortunate that nobody is able to apply the remedy in appropriate dosage ever. Some or all have tried but have been failing for the same reason that others are, not knowing the correct dosage.
    ——-
When one thinks about it, things seem simple yet overly complicated. Most if not all love their country, they advocate for just and free society, they stand for rule of law and yet nothing seems to unite them. Could it be that too many of good ideas that could never mange to produce tangible, morphed principles?
    ——
They seem to stay together only until something comes up that they don’t agree with and then undergo the usual split and formation of a new party with a new name but the same ideas. I have no idea how many more parties that people have to create to run away from differences. And differences emerge cyclical as they are natural and cannot be stopped.
    ——-
What makes me sad and worried is, the once upon a time trade mark and brand of politics in which a comrade used to sacrifice his/her own life not to endanger other comrades has slowly been replaced with a chameleonic politics. As the writer brilliantly illustrated it, the ever growing mistrust and rift continue getting bigger and bigger.
    ——-
I noticed some here coming out swinging at the writer without even reading the whole paper. Let us discuss about the message instead of attacking the messenger. Neither do I share his political view nor do I know whether he is Amhara, Oromo, Tigre, or whatever. I see him as an Ethiopian well versed in his theme and capable of elaborating his thoughts on a complex subject intelligently and thoroughly. Some opted to work with the enemy (Birhanu Nega, et al.). Some chose to fight hate by being hateful. Some completely abandoned politics. The ruling party keeps condescendingly slamming the door on their face.

Well, we are all victims of the socio-eco-political environment where we came from to a certain extent. Nevertheless the blame goes equally to all sides if not more to the government in power. They seemingly write laws to control and oppress others. Laws were written to be used as tools to legally dismantle political groups. Journalists (real and fake) are thrown into jails, or regulations enacted to prevent opposition groups from participating in elections. We must be prepared to voice our outrage and act to protect our citizens from hate and oppression. I always wonder whether the ruling party might have inadvertently created some heroes as a byproduct of its harsh treatment of journalists. Yes, it is widely known they write stuff that the government continues to argue as untrue, divisive, and destabilizing. But it has knowingly or unknowingly overestimated the merits of their articles, speeches, activities, whatever. Hence we see it unwisely overreacting time and again. Why just not trusting the public for judgment? We have a proud, compassionate and wise people and let it sift through the bad and good. Instead, the government has been taking harsh measures to punish them, rewrote laws so prosecution could be easy. At the end of the day the damage these measures have done is mutual and detrimental. Those unknown figures, whom no one has ever heard anything about from in the past, have all of a sudden become heroes (maybe undeservedly). By cracking down the messengers, they made them bigger than their actual messages. Not only are they transformed from side thorns into heroes but freedom fighter icons as well. Suffice to say that by going after the messengers not their messages/ideas, the government has been waging an unnecessary and PR costly fight.

The result has been more condemnation from the West (maybe who cares), intensified adversity from local opposition and of course another low blow to the art of compromising. There must be something wrong somewhere when one side keeps claiming they have created a democratic environment where opposition PPs can operate and the other side kept its outcry for a lack of such a space. And we have to endure, baffled and confused on constant bases the blaming, condemning, caricaturing, character assassination and deepening animosity among each other. That has sadly resulted in alienating and marginalizing so many good citizens out of participation and involvement. Vast number of people is directly and indirectly forced to sit by the sideline and watch.
    ——-
It is never too late to start listening to each other. Let us start giving the benefits of a doubt to our rivals. Let us try to do things differently. We will never get a different result by applying and reapplying the same dead ideas repeatedly. Let us stop attacking individuals instead let us try to attack their ideas (if flowed e.g. “open letter to Haile G. Selassie” from Abebe Belew, ethiomedia) or their actions per se (if perceived evil e.g. the Birhanu Nega group and its cooperation with foreign enemies). Let us encourage participation and involvement by stopping designed and inadvertent intimidations. All Ethiopians love their country and political parties should be able to harvest this extremely valuable and abundant passion instead of diving low to stir hatred and fear.
