AGOA-Eligible African Nations Ask for More 15 Years
On a forum recently hosted in Addis Ababa, under the theme of ‘Sustainable Transformation through Trade and Technology’, delegates of 39 sub Saharan African countries have pushed for the extension of duty-free and quota-free market access to the United States for another 15 years.
The extension is expected to give the 39 AGOA eligible countries enough time to build competitive capacity to exploit the US market and the global markets. President Barack Obama expressed his support for the extension of the agreement during his recent visit to South Africa.
However the US Congress is still debating whether the quota/duty-free status should be extended further. Please read Ambassador Girma Biru’s interview
