Thanks Awramba times for your coverage. The extreme right wing medias didn’t want to say anything about this glamorous festivity. Awramba has covered Demera and Irreecha equally. Keep up the good work

Right wing individuals & groups who brag unity but don’t respect Ethiopia’s diverse nations, nationalities & people’s culture & tradition! This shows that they have no source of unity whatso , not even among themselves! Therefore, extremist medias ignoring this beautiful traditional & culture of the Oromo people is expected before it happen!
What matters is , now the Oromo people can be themselves! Whatever in the minds of extremists is not going to matter!

….The Chinese concentrate around the Capital due to the disconcerting problems that Chinese policymakers and investors have encountered in Africa. There is an overall higher risk of uprisings and coups. In certain regions such as the Oromia , Ogaden , Gambella and Amhara regions, there have been a long string of crises. While not necessarily representative of all of Ethiopia, these events have strained projects due to conflict and instability.

Among Chinese investors, consciousness of conflict risks has grown since the eruption of civil war in Gambella which is boardering South Sudan - the country where China is most deeply invested. A rebel force of Gambella has cut communication across Gambella. So far, the conflict remains unresolved.
Amid the fighting by the Gambella rebels crossing to south Sudan $20bn worth of Chinese investments in oil in the Sudans could be destroyed. This episode will have lasting effect on China’s engagement across Africa.

A certain amount of bravado was apparent in past investments such as the one Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum, a state-owned oil company, made to drill for oil near Lake Chad. This is a volatile gateway into the Sahel, often subject to raids and hostage-taking. China is now more cautious in its approach to these regions. Indeed, the challenges have been the most strenuous in the Sahel region.

In one case, the Chinese Natural Petroleum Company (CNPC) developed an oilfield and refinery in Chad, but production was shut down by the Chadian government earlier this year for environmental violations. Yet Chad does not have a track record of consistently enforcing laws. When the same refinery opened, for instance, the government blindsided the CNPC by announcing a very low fixed price for refined petroleum products - a costly blow to the project that would rock relations going forwards. This later environmental penalty could be seen as retaliation against the CNPC for being unwilling to yield to any more giveaways.

Another high stakes battle took place in Niger, where former president Mamadou Tandja had demanded that the construction of a refinery be included in an oil production and infrastructure package with China. The refinery did not make commercial sense. Once opened, it was a financial failure. The government, meanwhile, was deposed by a coup shortly thereafter. In the aftermath, spreading out the losses became highly contentious. The Nigerien government went on the record to berate China’s stance. By October 2013, a deal was reached: China would loan Niger $1bn at 1 percent interest over 25 years, with a long grace period, to refinance the refinery.

However, arriving at similar compromises between lenders and investors in this troubled region cannot be taken for granted. The outbreak of war in South Sudan, and the frequent use of “take it or get expropriated” negotiation tactics by neighbouring governments makes the wider Sahel region uninviting to outside investors. This is a region of Africa where China could significantly reduce its engagement.

Nevertheless, the China-Africa relationship is premised on business, so the nature of government relations will remain rooted in that dimension. The continued growth of China-Africa business relationships will refresh diplomacy, but stagnant growth will lead to a dwindling exchange of visits.

China and Africa are entering into a less energetic phase of growth due mainly to low mineral prices. However, African governments can propel engagement to overcome this constraint by following the leads of Ghana and Zambia in creating conducive business environments.
I agree that we need to get the younger generation more engaged in leadership areas to stop these unwanted rebellion type attitudes toward the country’s flag. The generation of Engineer Gizachew should be on an adviser status and let the younger generation takeover. Whether we like it or not the seniors are going to be out lived by the young. We got to get prepared from now on how the next generation can smoothly continue the legacy of the AEUP. Even Atse Hailesselasie would not go through all that violence by if they let the next generation take over in time. We should be happy about seeing the up and coming Ethiopians deciding their own destiny.

Dear Sir, it doesn’t require to be an Oromo to know the Oromo’s religion, so many historians have written:

Trimingham described the Oromo people as peace loving and civilized nation. According to him “in general, the Oromo is intelligent, good-tempered”. (Source: Trimingham, Islam in Ethiopia, Cairo, 1951, page 189/ Oromo wisdom in black civilization, Dirribi Demisse, 2011, page 354).
Alaqa Atsime Georgis describes Oromo as intelligent and ethical as follow:
    1. “Whatever happens, the Oromo do not swear falsely”. (Source: Professor Getachew Haile, የአባ ባሕረይ ድረሰቶች፡ ኦሮሞን ከሚመለከቱ ሌሎች ሰነዶች ጋራ, © 2002 by Getachew Haile, Avon, Minnesota, page 219, Oromo wisdom in black civilization, Dirribi Demisse, 2011, page 355)
    2. “The rank and file passes better judgment in their Chaffee (Assembly) and court sessions than the Christians”. 3. “The Oromo tcheffe were banned by a proclamation (issued) by Menelik II, in order to prevent an eventual disturbance emanating from gatherings. Nevertheless, the judgments which the Oromo pass at their tcheffe are better and more observed than (those by) us who are near them and claim to be Christians”. Menelik proclaimed in 1885 banning the Chaffee of Oromo prohibiting the right of legislation. Again, in 1952 except in Amharic language, preaching and conducting learning and office activities by other languages was strictly forbidden. A society that possesses home developed religion, culture, a society that makes use of its history would no doubt become civilized and strong because of the fact that it develops cohesive internal bond and unified psychological makeup. The Israelis haven’t abandoned their ancestors’ religion and they haven’t forgotten history of their forefathers. That is why their unity became strong and their economy developed well. Professor John S. Mbiti, in his book “African Religions and Philosophy” Nairobi 1992, page 257, describes this fact as follows:
“Perhaps it is this religious self-seclusion which has ensured and encourage Jews survival as a people as a religious solidarity which in turn strengths their economic prosperity and cultural identity”.
In the same token, Professor Bahru Zewde, in his book “Pioneers of change in Ethiopia” describes why Japan and Thailand developed fast. He indicates that the Japanese people were educated in a little while and developed rapidly because they have cultural homogeneity and that the Thai also developed fast because of cultural unity.
Shinto, the Japanese religion advocates that followers of the religion should examine their environment and appreciate it, that the followers should love and respect their mountains, valleys and country. It also prescribes that parents should teach their children religion and handcrafts.
Worth mentioning here, the Japanese go to mountains and thank their God like the Oromo holding flowers. They like flowers and shining things. The Shinto religion teaches followers to decorate their homes, beauty their surroundings, as they believe God likes beautiful things. The religion also teaches the faithful to strive self-reliance.
The secrete, behind Japanese unity, patriotism and rapid development is the spiritual unity of the people in teaching of their Shinto religion. The truth is that those who stuck to self-identity prospered and turned stronger not those who denied the self and pretended to be others by imitating the newcomers.
It is, therefore, important to note that we lose our identity as we imitate others and ignore our values and history in favor of the imposed values. It is important equally to note that those whom we imitate when we abandon our values and endorse their do not honor us.
The truth is that we can’t be Arabs or Jewish no matter how we try to convert ourselves. They don’t generously embrace us as their own compatriots. The difference is visible. We are black; they are white. We believe God is black. “The Oromo say Waqa guracha (ጥቁር አምላክ )” the Black God (Professor Getachew Haile, የአባ ባሕረይ ድረሰቶች፡ ኦሮሞን ከሚመለከቱ ሌሎች ሰነዶች ጋራ, © 2002 by Getachew Haile, page 177)
Those who try to stain others for going to water sources for thanksgiving we go to rivers carrying tablets for the same purpose annually. What is epiphany, if not thanks giving? We even spend nights at riverbanks with our tablets. For that matter, it is written in Matthew 3: 13-17, that Jesus was baptized in Jordan River. Now, one can raise a valid question regarding the fallacy in practice and understanding of our people. Why do our people go to river sources, mountains and forests if these sites are satanic nature? Would these places turn to sanctity when it is used by us and otherwise for others?
Many books reveal that Moses draws a lesson from Cush’s natural low. As described in Exodus verse 2, 6, Mosses married a daughter from Cush priest family while he was a sheep-herd to the family of the girl and begot two children. In other words, Moses was hired in the home Cush as a cowboy and married a daughter of this religious leader. This shows that the people of Cush had culture of worship before the Jewish. Even the Jewish themselves accept that Moses was hired in the home of the Cush priest. The father in-law of Moses i.e. Jethro had advising Moses how to legislate laws, organizes and leads the people.
Moses at the same time gladly accepted the advice of his father in law and properly used it. This also written in exodus verse 18 line 15-27. Moses copied not only administrative laws from the Cush but also how to worship God. For example, exodus verse 19 lines 20-25 says Moses climbed a mountain called Sinai to meet with God and God advised him about religion. However, climbing to the top of a mountain and worshiping God is the culture of Cush.
The following evidences indicate that the people of Cush have been followers of monotheistic religion (belief in one God); they had their own civilization; and were richer in resources than the Jewish. The evidences are: when the Jewish sold Joseph, the Cush bought him; the ritual leader of Cush (Jethro) hired Moses as a shepherd / a cowboy; this priest /father-in law of Moses advised Moses to lead people; Moses implemented the advice of the priest effectively.
Moses lived with Jethro, the priest of the people for forty years. During his stay with people of Cush, he learnt a lot about monotheistic religion and worshiping God on the top of mountains. On the contrary, there is no evidence from the bible that describes Moses taught something to the people of Cush. Bible Exodus 18:1.

Mamush, really appreciate for all the lessons that you you gave us!

I personally believe that there is only one God who created the universe, people has developed their own way of communicating with their creator! There is Christians, Budha, Tao, Jew, Irreecha ,muslim, Shinto…..! God can’t be sketched into a picture, coz he is invisible! We use a lot of pictures in our churches which shouldn’t have been there!
    Thank you Mamush!

  11. Berhane Measho says:

Ethiopia was blessed that it was not colonized and for this reason many of its culture and historical resources remained undiluted and original.

Ethiopia’s most important resource is its diverse ethnic population with their several significant cultural values. Among these festivity is Erreecha festival. It is not only thanksgiving but most importantly its about peace, freedom, and unity (reconciliation, bringing people together and making religious, political and social unity). There is no comparable meaningful cultural festival so significant to Ethiopia than Irreecha. This festival should be national festival and Ethiopia should learn from this culture and apply as its core value for generation to come. The value and meaning of Irreecha also is global and hence Unesco should not waste time to register as world heritage of immense importance.

    Berhane Measho

  12. Esatu says:

The unfortunare thing in Ethiopia in my opinion is the back-tracking. During Derg time there was a governemnt orgainization created at the Ministry level called “Yebehereseboch Tenat Institute” and well educated and respected individulas were working and advising this institute. Even thogh the Goverment structure was not Federal there was a very good genuine inclusion of different cultures. Now rather than building on that, at the same time working for greater unity the current Ethnic based Aparthide Govm’t took over everything by force and trying to change the face of our beloved Country. However, as we saw by the death of the two tyrants, Meles and Paulos, God is working behind the scene for the betterment of the beloved historic Ethiopia.
