“PM Meles is not attending this meeting for health reason” - Senegalese President, Macky Sall
Awramba Times (Addis Ababa) - African leaders have arrived in Addis Ababa to attend the 19th Ordinary Session of Heads of State and Government of the African Union scheduled for 15 to 16 July, 2012.
Leaders of Namibia, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, Sudan, South Sudan, Chad and Mauritania were accorded with warm reception by Meles Zenawi’s deputy Hailemariam Desalegn and AU officials up on their arrival at Bole International Airport.
However Meles Zenawi has not been seen around. He has not even attended the Ordinary Session of the African Union which is being hosted in Addis Ababa until 16 July 2012. As the current chairperson of NEPAD, Meles is expected to deliver a report to the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC) ahead of the 19th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) to be kicked off tomorrow in Addis Ababa.
On behalf of PM Meles, Senegalese President, Macky Sall opened the meeting and have disclosed Meles Zenawi’s sickness to the participants of the summit.
“PM Meles is not attending this meeting with us this afternoon for health reason. We would like to express that we wish him to recover soon to a better health, President Sall affirmed.
Meles was born 8 May 1955 in Adwa, Tigray, to an Ethiopian father and a mother from Adi Quala, Eritrea. He graduated from the General Wingate high school in Addis Ababa, then studied medicine at Addis Ababa University for two years before interrupting his studies in 1975 to join the TPLF. While a member of the TPLF, he founded the Marxist-Leninist League of Tigray.
Meles has been the Prime Minister of Ethiopia since 1995. He was President of Ethiopia from 1991 to 1995. Since 1985, he has been chairman of the Tigrayan Peoples’ Liberation Front (TPLF), and he is head of the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
